FAQ > Mushrooms > What is spawn?

Search the FAQ for entries containing:

Spawn is mycelium tissue of fungi which is used to propagate mushrooms. Specialty strains of mushrooms are incubated in a laboratory, then cultivated into a variety of forms, including wooden dowels (called plugs), and proprietary mixtures of sawdust and grain. Each of these, once colonized by mycelium, is referred to as spawn.
