Foxcroft Microfarmers ; The Smith Family

The Smith family’s European style potager, or kitchen garden, sits neatly in the back corner of their tree lined Foxcroft property. A rose covered arbor welcomes visitors into the garden, while rose bushes and assorted herb plants line the inside of the garden’s ornamental white picket fence. Eight raised beds, each  measuring 4’x6’ , sit neatly down the center of the garden in two columns.  Tiffany Smith loves gardening, but  life as a busy mom of three made it difficult to keep the garden maintained.

“It’s a large garden that requires regular maintenance”, she explains, holding the baby. “With three kids, we have so much going on and it’s hard to keep up with the garden.”

“I was glad to find a company that specializes in edible garden design and maintenance”, she continues. “Microfarm has been so great to work with, and our garden has never looked better.”

When we first toured the Smith garden in September, we saw the remnants of summer vegetable plants lying on heavy, compacted soil. The first order of business was to lighten the heavy clay soil in each bed by incorporating peat moss and perlite, which improve drainage, and allows roots to take in nutrients more effectively.

Then we worked in Microfarm Mix - our own blend of slow, medium, and fast release organic amendments – to the soil in each bed. Once the beds were prepared, we planted a variety of cool weather heirloom seedlings, grown organically from seed right here in our  nursery.

Weekly applications of neem oil and soluble seaweed extract have kept the garden healthy and thriving.
