Meet the Taub Family

Every morning, the Taub home looks on as a stream of joggers and cyclists pass by on their way along the’ Booty Loop’ in Myers Park.“ We love the tree-lined streets and convenience of being near the city,” says Kelly. “ I used to garden with my dad, right up until I left for college,” she continues, examining the leaves on a spinach plant. “I remember every summer we’d grow all the ingredients to make gazpacho.  Growing our own produce really gave me a greater appreciation for food, and I want to share those lessons ad experiences with my daughter.”

The Taub’s are a busy family, but one thing they always make time for is a healthy diet. “Feeding my family organically grown food is important to me because we bypass chemical contaminants, and the produce is more nutritionally dense,” she explains. “I joined a CSA this summer, and really enjoyed the taste and variety of the vegetables we received.”

“Growing certain vegetable varieties organically at home , like lettuces, spinach, and kale for example , allow me even greater control over the quality and freshness of our family’s food than a weekly CSA box does. I like being able to harvest what I want on an as needed basis,” she adds.

Carefully working around an existing irrigation system, the Microfarm Team rebuilt the soil in two brick raised beds that had previously been used to grow ornamentals. We boosted beneficial microbial activity in the soil, by incorporating organic humus. We also added horticultural grade perlite to improve aeration and drainage, and Microfarm Mix fertilizer blend provided  the essential combination of readily available, as well as medium and slow release nutrients. We planted an assortment of  heirloom vegetable varieties that the Taub’s love to eat, including a medley of leaf lettuces, spinach and radishes for fresh salads, as well as kale, beets, carrots, garlic and mustard greens. Weekly maintenance visits ensure the garden's soil and plants stay healthy and productive.

“I was so delighted to find Microfarm,” says Kelly, smiling proudly next to a row of French Breakfast Radishes. “It’s wonderful to be able to share such a healthy, positive experience with my family.”
